A question worth asking
Which financial aid offer is better?
The largest award is not always the lowest-cost option. Compare the full cost of attendance after grants and scholarships, then examine the remaining costs, renewal conditions, and any borrowing you are considering.
Personal guidance. Practical questions.
Different letters. One clearer comparison.
Aid offers can use different labels and present costs in different ways. Our Forms & Awards Service includes awards analysis and appeals, helping families look past a headline amount and understand the decisions behind it.
Put the costs side by side
Review the costs shown in each offer and identify what is included. Keep billed charges and other expected expenses in view.
Separate the types of aid
Distinguish grants and scholarships from loans and work-study. Look at award conditions and questions about support in future years.
Discuss the next decision
Consider what remains to fund, what to clarify with each college, and whether your circumstances warrant a conversation about an appeal.
Keep the bigger picture
When should you ask about a financial aid appeal?
If the financial information used for an award no longer reflects your circumstances, contact the college’s financial aid office about its review process. The school may request documentation. We can discuss appeal questions as part of our service; the college determines whether an adjustment is appropriate. Additional aid is not guaranteed.
An example you can explore
Borrowing pays a cost.
It does not reduce it.
Our illustrative award letters separate gift aid from the amount left to fund. Follow the comparison before looking at your family’s own offers.

What helps an award review
You do not need every answer before reaching out. Start with your questions, and we can discuss the next step.
- Complete offers from the colleges you are comparing
- The costs and conditions attached to each offer
- Enrollment and response deadlines
- Questions or changes you want the college to consider
A little more clarity
Questions from families.
Awards analysis and appeals are part of the Forms & Awards Service and the combined Concierge program. A conversation can help identify which support is relevant to the offers and deadlines you have.
Compare our plansShould we compare total aid or the amount left to pay?
Start with the cost remaining after grants and scholarships, then evaluate how you would fund it. A package that includes loans can look larger without reducing the cost your family must cover.
Can a college reconsider financial aid after a change in circumstances?
A college may review an aid-adjustment request under its own policies. Contact its financial aid office about the process and required documentation. The outcome depends on the school and your circumstances.
Can you guarantee that an appeal will produce more aid?
No. A college controls its aid decisions. Our service helps families understand awards and discuss appeals without promising an increase or a particular outcome.
